Transalp Challenge 2003

Dear adidas BIKE Transalp Challenge participant,

We would like to thank you for registering for the great adidas BIKE Transalp Challenge 2003. We are certain that this globally unique super marathon bike race across the Alps will be an unforgettable experience and the adventure of a lifetime for you. We are doing our best in organizing the race and accommodation so that everything will run smoothly. Nevertheless, your own personal preparation is decisive for your success.

You can download and print the following informations alternative at: http://transalp.upsolutmv.com/en/transalp/teilnehmerinfo.htm

For this reason, we have put together a small checklist, which should make it easier for you to be well equipped for the start on Saturday, July 19t:

A backpack for the day per team

For safety purposes, this backpack should contain the following items:

1. Rainwear (rain jacket and long pants) for both participants
2. Warm clothing (fleece sweater or similar) for both participants
3. A small first aid kit for every team
4. A survival blanket for every team
5. Tools: Allen key set, chain riveter, spoke nipple jack, 2 hoses, repair kit and an air pump
(per team), possibly a pocketknife. 6. ID card, money
7. Set of cards, road book, emergency telephone numbers (supplied by us).

Due to safety reasons, each team will be checked that the basic equipment will be carried before everyday's start.

2. A bag with your personal belongings for the evening and the night.

When registering in Mittenwald, each participant (two per team) will receive, free of charge, a special adidas duffle bag (size: 82 x 38 x 36 cm) imprinted with their start number. This bag should be used for the personal belongings, which you might need after the end of each stage for the evening and night. We recommend the following items to be included: 1. Washing stuff plus towel. Shampoo (also for washing your clothing), swimwear!!
2. Light jeans, T-Shirt, shirt, sweater for the evening.
3. Nightwear This bag should also be used to store your sleeping bag in case you have chosen to use the mattress facility. Both team participants should drop off all bags at the transportation truck on time together on the morning of every stage (location and time will be announced). The bags will be transported to the next stage location where you can pick them up on arrival either at the mattress facility or directly in your hotel. Please understand that we can only transport one bag for each participant and cannot accept any additional items.

3. Accommodations

As a rule, each participant who signed up for the mattress facility will have an assigned spot. We will do our best to place your bags directly next to your sleeping point. The following morning, the team members must bring again their bags together to the "Transalp Camp" truck, which will be parked near the sleeping area. If you choose to switch from the mattress facility to a Bed & Breakfast during the event, you can do so without any problem. Tourism offices at the finish line of the various stage locations will put up information booths at which available rooms for the respective night and area are listed.

Please note that if you choose to take a room in a hotel or Bed & Breakfast in spite of the fact that you already booked a spot in the mattress facility, you have pay for it. It will not be possible for us to refund you the mattress facility charges you had already paid. Also in this case, please bring your bags back to the "Transalp Camp" truck the next morning for transportation.

4. Mobile homes

Each stage location has an assigned parking site for mobile homes. Town maps, which indicate the designated parking areas, are available through the racing office. In order to respect the local laws it is prohibited to camp outside the designated parking areas. You'll face the possibility to be prosecuted by police. Some villages will charge an overnight fee for your RV space rental. We kindly ask you to leave the area exactly the way you found it. In the event that there is no designated mobile home parking site, please look for the nearest local camping area.

Warning: unfortunately large events like adidas BIKE Transalp Challenge are popular sites for burglars. Please make sure that all of your valuable items and also the mountainbikes are always locked securly -inside your mobile home.

5. Bike computer

The adidas BIKE Transalp Challenge is an orientation race in which you must follow the preset route on your own with the help of a road book and maps. The road book gives you precise kilometer and altitude data for every route change. For this reason, we strongly recommend that every participant should have a bike computer and every team an altimeter.

6. Bike Check

The companies Scott, RockShox, Sram, Marzocchi, and Bicycles are all offering a bike check service and a technical service free of charge before the start in Mittenwald and at every stage finish. In case you need spare parts, they are offered at a special price and you must pay for those yourself. This means that no one has to bring his/her whole workshop along. However, we strongly recommend that you only do the tour with a technically flawless bike. The technical service is meant to be a racing service for malfunctioning parts and not a maintenance service. Please note that we can not offer technical help at the control points (up to three), which you will come across every day. Another advise: adidas is offering a shoe, textile and glass service. Furthermore, the adidas booth is also putting at the disposal of participants a Nasarov massage unit and two physiotherapist (Behmer) to support them.

7. Catering on the course

The control points are no food supply points. We only offer an amount of Squeezy drinks and energy gel and Schneekoppe fruit bars as courtesy of the event organizers. Please be a sportsman and leave food/drinks for your co-competitors, who will pass the point after you.

8. Bike shed / parc fermé

At every stage location, you can drop your bike off for the night in a guarded \"Parc fermé\" and you will receive a receipt for your bike. However, we will not be liable for bike thefts or vandalisms. For this reason, we also strongly advise you to have a lock for every team in order to padlock both team bikes together. The bikes will be handed back to you the next morning before every stage. To receive your bikes, your start number on your jersey and the one on the bike must be identical and you must present your receipt. Once your mountain bike is dropped off at the guarded bike shed, you can only have access to it again on the following morning starting at 6:00 AM

9. Massage service

This year, our massage team will be working hard on reviving tired muscles. Five physiotherapists will be available by appointment from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM every day of the race. The treatment of 15 minutes will only cost you EURO 11. The massage team is located in the mattress facility.
